Instructions for signing up for workshops:
You may register for only two workshops in total. Workshops are being limited to 25 attendees. That will leave you without a workshop for one of the sessions. During that session you will be able to attend the Youth Maker Faire Showcase being held in the Gymnasium where you will discover the many extra-curricular and summer time activities available in Bermuda for students of all ages. Your Middle and Senior School age children are welcome to spend the entire time of the Parent Expo at the Youth Maker Faire where they can try various activities and be entertained. The Primary Age Children will be escorted in groups through the Maker Faire by the volunteer child sitters.

Schedule of Parent Expo

3:00 – 6:00pm
Maker Faire Showcase

Come visit the Maker Faire Showcase which celebrates invention, creativity, and resourcefulness in young people. Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, the Youth Maker Faire Showcase will provide you the opportunity to be introduced to all the organizations and programmes that help our youth through creative learning and character building activities. The Department of ICT Policy & Innovation has funded this inaugural event in Bermuda. The Youth Entrepreneurship Initiative is coordinating the Showcase along with the Department of Youth, Sport, and Recreation, and the Bermy Maker Group.

OPTIONAL SESSION A

A 1.
Effective Study Skills- Linda Parker –Head (Principal) – BHS & Tamicia Darrell – Deputy Principal -- West End  Primary School
This interactive session will expand participant’s knowledge of the various learning styles and how these link to study skills. Parents will also receive tips on how to improve their children’s organizational skills & ideas on optimizing a special home area conducive for learning.

A 2.
“Health & Wellness” – Marie Beach – Coach/Trainer
Participants are invited to come dressed appropriately for an active & fun session which will involve experiential learning for how to maintain a healthy body, mind & spirit.

A 3.
“Addressing the Challenges of 21st Century Parenting  (Primary Level)- Anthony Peets – School Counsellor & Child Advocate
Session will provide an overview of how parents might assist their children in navigating those new challenges facing the current generation. Participants will be encouraged to share with each other the impact of those strategies that have been successful – and otherwise.

A 4.
“Beyond High School – Preparing for the Future” -   Dr Duranda Greene – President – Bermuda College
This will include an overview of the options available to students, upoun graduation from secondary school; exploring the variety of paths available. This will include apprenticeships in employment; the variety of technical-training possibilities and the traditional college pathways. An examination of available scholarships and other financial assistance opportunities for further-education will also be explored.

A 5.
“Meeting the Challenge of Child Abuse”  Maureen Trew & Alnisha Peets – Child & Family Services
The session is geared to sensitize parents on how they might navigate around the thorny issue of Child Abuse in the event it has any direct or indirect impact – no matter how small – on their family.

B 6.

“Implications for the Challenges & Opportunities of Social Media in our Culture”  Dave Horan – Principal – Warwick Academy  & Kenneth Caesar – Acting-Principal - Cedarbridge
Participants will gain an understanding of how the pervasive use of Social Media is shaping 21st Century culture, especially for young people. The session will explore strategies that protect the more vulnerable, while drawing from any benefits of new technology.

B 7.
“The Impact of the HPV Virus on the Health of Young People” – Genevive Williams – Hamilton Clinic
Parents will gain insights into this virus which is not as widely known as many of this class of pathogen (germ), but which can have negative implications on the health of young people.

B 8.
“Making Use of Free-Online Support to Strengthen Your Child’s Performance in Math, etc – Khan Academy" & Mischa Fubler – former teacher; I.T. Consultant at BELCO.
Participants will be introduced to KHAN ACADEMY – the Free Online program that provides a tutorial service for students – K-12 – in Math, Science, etc. Parents will be led through the beginner stages of how this tool can empower their children and the rest of the family, in support of their educational journey.

“Addressing the Challenges of 21st Century Parenting (Middle Level) – Jermaine Burrows – Counsellor @ Sandy’s Middle School
Session will provide an overview of how parents might assist their children in navigating those new challenges facing the current generation. Participants will be encouraged to share with each other the impact of those strategies that have been successful – and otherwise.

“Early Childhood – When Small Steps Make a Big Difference” – Andalyn Swan – Head of Happy Valley Day Care - & her team
Parents will gain insight into how careful care offers powerful leverage in the lives of our youngest children. The interactive session will help them discover useful at-home activities which will reinforce learning for toddlers & pre-schoolers.

“7 Habits of Effective Families” – Martha Kirkland – Local Consultant – Covey Institute.
 Participants will enjoy an interactive session on how they might use the approaches grounded in “7 Habits” to empower families to optimize the development of their children.

C 12.
“Health & Wellness” – Marie Beech – Coach/Trainer

“Addressing the Challenges of 21st Century Parenting” – (Senior Level) - & Cathy Fubler – Exemplary Parent – Children at Cedarbridge
Session will provide an overview of how parents might assist their children in navigating those new challenges facing the current generation. Participants will be encouraged to share with each other the impact of those strategies that have been successful – and otherwise.

C 14.
“Family Budgeting- Planning 4 the Future” – Honey Adams – Dir. Consumer Affairs
Parents will receive a nutshell presentation on optimizing their Family Budget and gain insights into how early planning can provide a foundation for a child’s educational journey.

C 15.
“Parent as  Early Coach”  Calvina Simons & Isabelle Weber – Early Childhood Specialists
Participants will learn how children can learn from play, as well as positive reinforcement techniques.  Parents will receive strategies for nurturing a child’s nature, insights into understanding a child’s temperament and skills on fostering your child’s development.
